My heart holds three little boys, two J's and a B.

At 4, B is the oldest and the one I know most intimately because he spent his first years living in my house. Now, as the occasional visitor, he still rules the roost. He insists on retrieving the mail and the newspaper, unloading the dishwasher and taking out the garbage.

Even though I feed the goldfish regularly, when he asks, I must tell a white lie and claim I don't. He demands no one feed them but him, even if a week or two has stretched between his visits. He's heading off this week to 4-year-old kindergarten, but we can't call it that. It's pre-K, he insists.

Yes, he's a tyrant, but a loveable one.

Who else gives me a million kisses and revels in spending Saturday morning at yard sales with me?

He drags me to the neighborhood ice cream store so he can gobble a cone and then spend an hour climbing the ladders and sliding through a tube that brings him back to ground level.

He professes love for his Granny. He loves me more than I love him, he insists. If I love him a million, he loves me a million billion, and if that number doesn't suit, he loves me 6-8-9-7-2. So there.

The older of the two J's loves me too. You can see it in his face when I walk in his front door. He runs down the hallway beaming, extending a welcome that wipes out the pain of driving the disaster that is Route 581 to reach his house.

Sometimes he hugs me tightly and says, "My Granny." Very possessive. I like that.

He's a much sweeter child. Gentle in many ways, but all boy. When I call and ask what he's doing, it's always the same answer, "Playing cars and trucks."

He entertains himself for hours with his cars and trucks. Very independent.

He's also nimble with a soccer ball, a skill he acquired, I believe, in the backyard with Daddy and his older sister.

Of the three little men in my life, he's the only one with siblings. Both are older, and he's sopped up their knowledge like a sponge.

He went off to nursery school Thursday. He'll be at school two mornings a week. From the excitement, you would have thought he was entering Harvard.

He's been preparing for weeks. He's ready for playtime and circle time and anxious to make new friends.

"I'll just ask them, 'Do you want to play?'" he said.

The 3-year-old J also has an uncanny knack for music. Before he could talk, he was humming songs with perfect pitch. Later, he added the words.

It's not unusual to hear him on the porch, playing with cars and singing "Jingle Bells," oblivious to the fact that Christmas is months away.

The second J, I don't see as much, but he and his parents recently spent a weekend at my house. At just shy of 2, he's insistent on keeping Mom and Dad within his sight.

He prefers I keep my distance, but he'll laugh and flirt with me, his big blue eyes sparkling, as long as I don't try to pick him up. Aside from reticence, he has little fear. He'll climb, slide or jump on anything.

Mom and Dad shared video of him from their recent beach vacation. It shows him running full steam toward the ocean, then throwing himself, face down, in the waves.

Along with water, he loves fire engines, noisy toys and little balls he can throw all over the house.

He's also adept at snatching things he's not supposed to touch, such as telephones and remote controls, and hiding them, prompting an all-out parental search.

If the older J likes making music, this one likes dancing to it. He contorts his little body like a late-night dancer at a Second Street club.

Three boys, all different, with one thing in common: Each is a gift. If I never get another present in my life, I won't care.

When I'm with one of them, I have all I need.

Two Years Old

Jonathan was born at 1:41 p.m. on July 31, 2006. Now that he is two years old, he is full of energy. He seems to be constantly in motion.

He is fascinated by trucks and trains. He runs to the window whenever a truck drives by. He likes to go bye-bye in the van.

He knows lots of animal sounds and can repeat them: duck, bear, lion, cat, dog, horse, cow, etc. He is starting to use words more and more, simple things that he sees every day like water, milk, baby, book. He just learned to say "DVD." He also loves his sisters and likes to say their names.

He likes to go swimming. He has been riding in the bike trailer all year, and just started going in the bike seat sometimes instead.

Nap time and bed time have been a lot easier recently. Jonathan likes to read books before bedtime. He usually gets into his crib without too much complaining and says, "Night night." A few times recently, he slept in a toddler bed instead of his crib.

He is getting to be a big guy.

Jonathan has been watching Sesame Street occasionally in the evenings before bedtime. He likes Elmo and the songs, but sometimes he gets a little bit scared of the monsters. A few nights ago, there was a LOUD, sustained shriek from the family room while he was watching with his Little Big sister. I rushed in to see what was the matter. Little Big said, "He doesn't like that guy," pointing to the TV screen. "He started SCREAMING as soon as he came on."

Jonathan is a singer. He can sing, or at least hum, lots of songs, including "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," "Old Macdonald Had A Farm," and of course the Teletubbies theme song. Oh, yeah -- and the "Barney" theme song, too. He also likes to play the piano. Sometimes he sings little songs while he plays.

He likes to play with cars and trucks. He colors on paper with pencils and crayons. He likes to get in his new bike trailer and go for rides with Daddy, or sometimes Mommy, all around the neighborhood.

Jonathan is very active. He's steady on his feet and he chases his sisters all over the house. He runs from room to room and scoots up and down the steps.

He is getting to be much more responsive. He doesn't exactly talk, but he can make a few sounds and carry on short "conversations" with Mommy and Daddy. He says "Thank you" when we hand him food or a sippy cup, he knows the sounds that some animals make, and he is just beginning to make the "I don't know" gesture (arms apart, hands upturned) when he can't find something. He also says "bye bye!" and runs to the door if he thinks anyone is going anywhere.

He loves to carry telephones all over the house. He comes down in the morning and grabs the cordless phone off the charger. He looks for our cell phones and always wants to hold them when we go for rides in the car. He pushes the buttons and holds them up to his ear, and offers them to Mommy and Daddy with a little grunt or squeak that sounds like a question -- "You want?" Something like that, anyway. Actually, he loves anything electronic, anything that beeps, and gets quite nasty sometimes if anyone tries to take something like that away from him.

It has been a tough month. The days are getting both shorter and colder and Jonathan hasn't been able to play outside very much. He has been sick. He's had a fever, congestion and a cough for most of the past week. His new and incoming teeth also seem to be bothering him. All in all, he's been pretty cranky and has had trouble sleeping.

But he is also having a lot of fun. He's very steady on his feet and he trots all around the house. He climbs on chairs and tables. He picks up the telephone, or Daddy's cell phone, or anything that looks like a phone, and holds it up to his ear and says, 'llo, 'llo. He shakes his head side to side and sometimes waves his arms when he wants to say no. He plays with trucks and goes vroom, vroom, vroom. He loves to chase his sisters around. And at night, he gets in his warm pajamas and picks up Goodnight Moon and climbs on Daddy's lap and smiles while we read it. He is a good boy.

Jonathan is 13 months old and really, truly, no-doubt-about-it walking.

It's hard to definitively answer the question, "When did he take his first step?" He has been pulling himself up to a standing position for a long time, and gradually learning how to balance himself. He began trying to walk a month or more ago, but he usually plopped back down after only one or two steps. For one thing, he was too chubby for his little legs to carry him very far. But the biggest problem seemed to be that he just didn't trust himself to stay upright, and it was safer and easier to hit the floor.

Now, his legs have gotten a bit stronger, and he's been watching all the fun his sisters and their friends have by walking, running and jumping.

The first time he really took a good strong sequence of steps and covered some ground in a straight line was in the lobby of the Hyatt Waterfront hotel in Philadelphia when we were getting ready to check out on Friday morning, August 24. After he found out he could do that pretty well, he started doing it over and over and over, first at his Mam-mam's house that weekend, then at his twin cousins' birthday party, and now at home. Here's one of his less successful efforts:

One of the best things about being born in the summer is that you can celebrate your birthday on vacation. Jonathan celebrated his first birthday at the beach in Chincoteague, Virginia with Mommy, Daddy, both sisters and both grandmothers. Everyone had a super time.

11 Months Old

June was just a blur of parties, playgrounds and amusement parks. Those sisters got to run around a lot, but Jonathan had plenty of fun, too.

Jonathan put on his David Wright outfit* and headed over to City Island to check out his first baseball game. He liked the music and cheers between pitches, and joined in by giggling and stomping his feet. He also liked the French fries a lot. He, literally, had a ball -- you can see him holding it in the fuzzy camera phone pictures below.

*I'm not sure why he has a David Wright outfit instead of, say Scott Rolen or Wes Helms, but it is what it is.

Jonathan's sisters have a kid-sized activities table where they spend a lot of time drawing, writing stories and doing arts and crafts. Jonathan likes to sit and watch them intently, taking in all the fun things they do.

Yesterday, he was crawling around while they were doing some activities. After a while, both girls went to do other things in other parts of the house, leaving some of their pens, markers and drawing pads on their table.

That's when Jonathan saw his chance.

Ten Months Old

He's into everything. He scoots and crawls all over the house, pulls himself up to a standing position approximately 47 times a minute, and picks up and eats anything that even looks like food. Basically, he's Jack Jack from The Incredibles, except that he doesn't spontaneously burst into flame every 30 seconds. Yet.

What else? He weighs 21 pounds, 11 ounces. He thinks his sisters are a hoot. He loves to play in the bathtub. He likes to look at books. He screams at bed time, but then sleeps peacefully most of the night.

He likes to go for stroller rides around the neighborhood. He sits quietly, chewing on a pretzel or a cookie, and looks around to take in all the sights.

He is usually OK in the car, except on long trips or when he's already cranky. He falls asleep easily in his car seat, but sometimes wakes up when he gets home.

He will sit quietly and watch Teletubbies or Baby Einstein in the evening, right before bedtime. He can hold his bottle or even a sippy cup pretty well, but sometimes he drops it on the floor, either by accident or, more and more, on purpose. It's a game he's just learning.

He crawls all over the place now. He just started doing that this week. Before that, he used to roll wherever he wanted to go.

He has learned to wave "hello" and/or "goodbye" and thinks that it is quite a lot of fun.

He wants to stand up and run and play with the big kids, but he's not quite ready for that yet.

He is ready to have a funfunfun summer.

8 Months Old

Jonathan is 8 months old.

He doesn't crawl, but every now and then he'll get on his little hands and knees and have a look around. Then he'll usually decide that it's easier and more fun to roll from side to side instead. When you're very chubby, it's easy to be roly-poly!

He can scoot around in his walker pretty well, both backward and forward.

He has one tooth starting to poke through on the bottom row, with another one not far behind.

His eyes are getting to be very deep blue. His hair is red or orange.

He likes to watch the Baby Einstein videos, but he is scared of the dogs in Baby Mozart. He likes it when people sneeze playfully. It almost always makes him laugh.

His sisters bought him a toy telephone last week with (mostly) their very own money.

He gets very cranky in the evening and usually screams and cries until he falls asleep. Then he snoozes peacefully for about an hour and then wakes up in a better mood before going to sleep for the night. He wakes up a few times during the night, but usually goes back to sleep without too much trouble.

He likes to go for stroller rides around the neighborhood. He is learning about the backyard and the playground in the next block. He tries to eat the grass.

He is a happy baby with happy sisters, and a tired but happy Mommy and Daddy.

That's right! I'm an entire half year old!

Where does the time go, anyway? One minute you're being yanked out into a cold room by your bare backside and the next minute you're rolling around another cold room...on your bare backside.

I can roll now. I don't do it often. Just enough to make my mommy heave alternate sighs of relief and concern. I mostly like rolling around when I'm nudie pants because I love the feel of olefin pile carpeting all over every square inch of my adorable chubby body.

Now, don't go getting all concerned that I'm going to grow up to be a performance artist or some questionable character who likes to wander around flooring stores rubbing his elbows on the Persian rugs. Because, to tell the truth, I'd rather be sitting up. Oh, sitting up! I don't how many of you can sit up, but let me tell you, there's nothing like it. Most of all because you can see things not all upside-down backwards or sidewise, and that makes a difference when you're reading Goodnight Moon or watching Baby Galileo with your sister and forming your first impressions of planet rotation around the sun or hand puppets. Upside-down hand puppets are scary and make me scream.

Although, I don't sceam often. I am what Mommy calls "a mellow baby." When mommy bundles me up in the Land's End fleece straight jacket and we go wheeling around the gorcery store, people stop and say things like, "Oh, what a cute baby! Is he a good baby?" And Mommy always says, "Oh, he has his moments when he steals the car keys and drives to bars, but mostly he's a mellow baby." And I smile and gurgle and put on a little show to make that person's day, and do a pretty good job of saving all my "moments" for between the hours of 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

Usually, around 6:00 PM, I begin what I like to call My Joe Cocker Impersonation. That's where I enter the spotlight with a little melodic blues singing and hand flapping, but then over the course of the song I start busting out with the gutteral wailing, hair pulling, and full body shakes. All, of course, to a smokin' horn section.

What else, what else....

Well, I still think my sisters are a hoot. They can both get me belly-laughing just by waving their arms around and making goofy sounds.

And one of my favorite activities of all time is chewing on things. Paper, toothbrushes, stuffed animals, more paper. Chewing just feels so good. Once in a while I play this game where I chew on my toothbrush, and then I put it in Mommy's mouth so she can chew on it. My little-big sister says, "That's gross." I call it "building my immune system". Whatever an immune system is.

Okay. It's time for nappies now. I'll be back at seven months with more tales from the floor.

And don't forget - it's never to early to start shopping for someone's first birthday! I'm thinking chewy toys, I'm thinking more socks, I'm thinking a white suit and a t-shirt just like Joe Cocker's that says "Stuff". I'll take on John Belushi's impersonation any day.

Hello world!

I'm five months old today and I'm just as cute as all get out!

Back when I was 4 1/2 months old, I went through a few days of hating baths just about as much as a person could hate baths. Even when my mommy was washing the dishes, I'd scream at the sound of water running. Scream!

AAAAAAHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH!

Like that real loud.

But then my toes started stinking from their lack of contact with clean water, and since there's almost nothing I like more than when Mommy nibbles my toes, I gave the bath one more try.

It was...okay. But don't sign me up for swimming lessons anytime soon.

Other than my water phobia and a love of having my toes nibbled, let me tell you, I sure do dig eating.

Wow.

Gustatorily speaking, planet Earth is a pretty fabulous place, and I've only sampled from a limited buffet: milk, butternut squash, rice cereal, sweet potatoes, pears, and carrots. There's nothing quite like a big helping of white and orange food. Oh...there were those peas. Peas made me shudder a bit, but that was before my sister, Isabel, gave me the lowdown on green foods and how best to avoid them. I think we need to talk again, and this time I need to bring a pen and paper to take notes.

Anyway, with all this eating, my name has officially been changed to "Oh my goodness, look at those cheeks!" And then come the pinches. And the raspberry kisses. I guess it's okay...but once summer is here and I'm wearing shorts, I pity the fool who tries to pinch my chunky thighs. Hands off, ladies!

I'm a whopping 20 pounds and you should see how great Mommy's biceps and shoulders look from carrying me around so much. She's truly ripped and vascular.

I'm a pretty good sleeper at night. I still get up to snack once or twice, but I also sleep in until about 9:30 AM. However, it's all bells and fireworks until about 10:30 PM each night. And naps? Well, I find it works best to cat nap each day - 10 minutes here, 12 minutes there - and then pick one day of the week to catch up and nap all day.

I like sitting up and can do it pretty well with a little support. I have no interest in rolling over in any which direction, and really, have you ever tried to lift a thigh that was 49% of your body wieght? Take it from me, if you ever need something "over there", the best thing to do is squawk until your sister gets it for you. Rolling over...pfft.

I do like to squawk and blow raspberries myself. I love being tickled under the chin, and I laugh like it's a genuine riot. I also think it's hilarious whenever anyone sneezes and laugh so hard I sometimes fall forward and bang my forehead.

All in all, a good and successful five months. I'm looking forward to month six and anticipate more squawking to get people to do all sorts of nifty things for me. I'm definitely management material.

He wakes with his sisters in the morning, and then naps in his swing after they leave for school.

He eats, eats, eats.

He fusses at night, but then again, who doesn't.

He quiets to the sound of running water and NPR.

He loves having warm water poured over him.

He sneezes and then says, "Oooooohhhhhh."

He smells like milk.

He is a sweet, beautiful boy.

He is sleeping on his mommy's shoulder right now.
